Hypnosis
The hypnotic state is a natural one that everybody goes through at least twice a day. You are in that state when you are between being fully awake and sound asleep. It occurs when the conscious mind is otherwise occupied, (i.e. asleep, or intently focused on something). If you are reading a book that is a “page turner”, you are in the hypnotic state, if you are absorbed in a TV show, or a movie, you are in that state. Perhaps you have been driving and you find you have gone several miles without realizing it. In this case, your conscious mind wandered to something important to you and you were in a hypnotic state, not a good place to be while driving.
When working with a Hypnotist, you’ll find the hypnotic state very relaxing, because your body will seem to be asleep. However, that is not true for your mind. In fact, your mind becomes hyper aware of everything that is going on around you. You will begin to notice sensations in your body that your conscious mind normally ignores as unimportant, your breathing, your swallowing, itches, minor pains, discomfort, etc. But while aware of them, you will find that they are of no concern t you. They just prove that you are in the hypnotic state.
Unfortunately, the only exposure most people have to hypnotism is from stage shows where a stage hypnotist hypnotizes several volunteers and leads them through entertaining situations. It is usually a lot of fun for both the volunteers and the audience. However, it often gives the wrong impression of hypnotism, because without knowing how hypnosis works, people see the stage hypnotist as seemingly controlling the actions of the volunteers. Nothing could be further from the truth, since the volunteers were carefully chosen, and also want to have a good time, so they choose to help entertain the audience.
Hypnosis is nothing more than the “Art of Suggestion”. As when awake, the subject in hypnosis, chooses whether or not to accept the suggestion. When the suggestion is in line with the subject’s wants, it is accepted and goes deeply into their subconscious where it literally rewrites the programming that the subconscious uses to run the subject’s day to day life. Since the subconscious mind controls 90% or more of the body’s functions, the new programming is particularly effective in changing habit patterns.
Hypnosis is not magic, and requires that the subject actively participate in their own habit change.
