NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP)

NLP is a unique model of how people learn, motivate themselves, and change their behavior to achieve excellence in any endeavor.  It is the systematic study of human performance.  It was originally developed on the 1970’s but has continued to be modernized up to the present day.

It derives its name from, NEURO, because all of our experiences, both conscious and subconscious, arise out of the input from our five senses, and central nervous system; LINGUISTIC because our mental processes are also coded, organized, given meaning and transformed through language; and PROGRAMMING because people interact as a system in which experience and communication are composed of sequences of patterns or “programs.”

NLP works with the words and language patterns that we use to motivate ourselves and others to do things.  For example, our parents programmed the word “because” into us as children.  Whenever they wanted us to do something that we didn’t feel like doing, they used their parental authority and said “… because I say so”.  Even today, as adults, we respond to the word “because” in a similar way.

NLP was partially developed from the study of the brilliant psychiatrist and hypnotist, Milton Erickson.  He was very successful in helping people overcome their problems.  Many of his techniques were incorporated into NLP.
